Break 80 Update: Week #1 – Club Release

Week 1

Working On: Club Release

Since I want to hit a slight draw (a Go To Shot), I am looking for a slightly open clubface. If my club release is done incorrectly then I will be hitting “soft slices”, losing speed and pushing the ball to the right. The Slap Hand drill will help me to avoid these mistakes in my swing.

Checklist

In my practice sessions, I will be looking at my stats to AVOID these faults:

  1. Clubface Angle is more than Open 2.0

  2. Swing speed decreasing

  3. Fewer White zone hits (especially to the right)

Below is the checklist I will be using to check and see if the slap hand drill is helping my club release. ClubClubface Correct (Less than Open 2)Swing Speed Correct (65 & 75)White Zones +/= ( 9 & 5) 9 Iron 4 Iron

So after 5 consecutive days of practicing Jim McLean’s Slap Hand Drill, I really noticed some positive improvements in my club release. The drill was aimed at helping me avoid weak soft slice shots as I release the club. I wanted to make sure that I was not opening my clubface past 2˚ and that my swing speed was consistent (not decreasing).

After the first day, I was not sure that the drill would help me get my hands in the right position and that was apparent as I did not achieve many “yes” marks on my checklist.

By the third day, I started to see some improvement with my 4 iron. My clubface went from Open 3.7 to Open 1.1 which is perfect for my “Go To Draw” that I am trying to hit. My swing speed did slow slightly but I hit an amazing (for me) 8 white zone targets (within 15 ft).

After my 5th practice session, I had all 6 checkmarks. My swing speed increased and my clubface was almost perfect. In fact, my 4 iron clubface angle reached 1.5 and I had 8 out of 25 shots inside 15 feet. I was releasing the club much better than before.

Overall, my 9 iron stayed fairly steady but I saw drastic improvements with my 4 iron. I still need to work on my swing path but that will be in a later week. I wasn’t sure the Slap Hand drill would do much to my swing but I was pleasantly surprised.
